The mods have been discussing the design of the forum and would like to make some major changes to how it is laid out. Those of you who have been members for several years will know that it has changed a lot since it was first set up, and the current design does not really meet its needs.

This is what we currently have:
- A lot of "dead" boards that are never posted in.
- An open discussion board (again, almost never posted in).
- A girls only section that all female members have access to.
- A 20+ girls section, membership given to core older members.
- A PG section, membership given by request only.

Not only does it seem pointless having a large number of "dead" boards, but we are also aware that all regular members are now 20 or over and are at a similar life stage. The previously "younger" members (people like Kris, Julie and Sadie, for example) are all married or engaged and it is no longer appropriate to have an older/younger member division. This was useful when there were two very distinct sets of people using the forum, but now things have changed a lot and the younger single girls have grown up!

This is what we are proposing:
- To shut down the "dead" boards that no one ever posts in (off the top of my head, these would be all the fun and games section, the library, general discussion and a number of the spiritual boards).
- To combine the general discussion and the girls discussion into one more general board. This would be the place to talk about food/meals, festivities, books, films, daily life, work, study, etc. All members to have access.
- To streamline the spiritual sections into one spiritual board, where we could post prayer requests, devotionals and spiritual discussions. All members to have access.
- To make the current 20+ section into a marriage/pregnancy/parenting board. All current members to have access. This section definitely to be made private.
- To keep the current PG section as it is - i.e. access at individual member's request only. This would be kept private (as it currently is) and would be the place to talk about sex, periods, birth control, etc.
- There would also be a mods' discussion board and a forum announcement board as at present - no changes to be made.

Can we please ask for feedback on two main points:
1. Are you happy with the proposed changes, or do you have any further points to raise / suggest?
2. Feedback would be welcomed regarding the privacy of the general discussion and prayer request boards.

I most certainly agree! Have thought of it for awhile. Although I still like it that the girls section is private so strangers looking in cant see it. Boys could be part of it if there was ever a boy around.

And... U have a 20 plus section...? Like seperate from girls and pg ?

Yes, the 20+ section was started a while back, and we haven't been very good at updating it to keep the 20+ people added.

Sounds like a good plan in general. I wonder, though, if the reason that most of our conversation is in the Girls area is because it's private? Aka, if you made the general discussion forum public, would people start posting in the private areas instead for privacy reasons? Not sure there's much need to have any public sections...we're not going to have people randomly showing up, and if we created a public guest account, then if we had a friend that we wanted to have join but the friend wanted to poke around before joining, they could use that account. I don't know if this is making sense or not...

But hey, if we have a general discussion board that is open to the boys too, then maybe when they occasionally check in they'll actually stick around! :O

I agree with Elisabeth. I mostly post in girls, even if it's a subject that I would be fine with guys seeing, because I may include more personal information such as siblings or my fiance's name. I would prefer to have a general board and a girls only private board. And maybe we could all make an effort to post stuff that isn't private in the general board. We could move the meals and Thanksgiving and Halloween threads in there.

And technically, I'm not 20 but I will be in four weeks! And I really like the idea of a marriage, parenting, pregnancy board. Although, it seems to me that a lot of that subject matter would also fall under the PG section.

And as for the fun boards, I just posted in one of them about a video! But yea, I'd be fine with eliminating that and having a video thread in a general board which I do think we should keep.

*Just saying that I'm writing with my own views, not on behalf of all the mods*

Thanks for the comments. Elisabeth/Julie - you've raised some points that I've been thinking about myself. We haven't had any random new members for at least two years, hence I am not as worried as I might otherwise have been about making the majority of the forum private access only. If we agree that the forum's aim is to serve its current members and not to attract new ones, then I'd be happy to keep most sections private.

So basically...
EITHER we make the general/girls section private and accept that we just cater to current members or any who come via word of mouth. I like Elisabeth's idea of having a trial Guest account we could give the details to, if someone was interested in joining. What do others think about that?

OR we make the general/girls section public....I accept what Julie is saying about making private details public, but realistically any really personal/private info would not be on a general board anyway. Most private info will relate to relationships or families and they will now go in the old 20+ area. I can't see that much private info would appear in a thread about, say, meals, and we all know each other's partners if you wanted to use their initial instead.

So that's the two scenarios - does that help people to clarify what they might prefer? Personally, I am against keeping a general board AND a girls board; I can see the public general board reverting to dead within a few weeks and a dead board serves as much purpose as no board at all. As for the comment about guys, there shouldn't be any really "girly" topics in the general/girls board because it will now go in either the old 20+ or the PG section, so that's not really relevant.

-----------

Julie - Actually the 20+ section is pretty tame! Smile Recent topics have included sleep training, pregnancy pains and cloth nappies! Hence I would support the need for a separate PG area. If all members now have access to the old 20+ area, there will be a number of unmarried ladies who may have valuable things to say about, say, child-rearing but who don't want to read about married sex lives in detail.

------------

Julie - Feel free to put videos anywhere - I can't see any problem with them being in a general/girls area!

As you can see, the forum has now changed! Very Happy

Everyone who has used the forum in the past 6 months should now have updated access settings, giving them access to all three main boards (general discussion, marriage/babies discussion, and spiritual/prayer board). Access to the PG board continues to be by request only. If you think your access settings are wrong, please get in touch with one of the mods to change this.

It has also been agreed by the mods that all boards should be private, except for this 'regarding the forum' one. You can test this by logging out and this should be all you can see! It seems to be the general consensus that people valued their privacy and we are not out to attract new members. However, should you have a friend you want to introduce to the forum, Elisabeth's Guest account idea seems valuable and we can get that set up if and when the situation arises.
