PostSubject: Re: Women In The Military   Thu Oct 29, 2009 4:33 am

I think women in the military is fine in principle. The two concerns I think of are firstly, women's ability to perform some tasks (in terms of physical strength). However, this can easily be rectified by people being assessed as competent to perform tasks/work in a situation - which is how employment stuff works generally.

The other concern I immediately think of is the safety of women if they become a POW. Suffice to say that whilst both males and females can be raped, I'd be thinking it would happen much more to females in these situations than males. However, a lot of other horrible things can also happen to males and females if they become a POW. I know there is a document that states what acts are permissible in war and what aren't (Geneva convention? Dunno) but I don't know really what's on there. And just because something is "in the document" doesn't mean it's not going to happen.

In sum, I see no reason why women shouldn't be in the military. But I think male nurses are great too. Very Happy

I was wondering about women police officers? If men are supposed to be the protectors, does that mean women shouldn't be police officers?

I would argue here that female police officers are not generally as effective. A guy's just not nearly as intimidated by a girl (of any age) as he is by a big guy. Also, the fact that men are naturally stronger than women (on average...I know there are examples where this is different Smile ) means that on average, a male criminal would be more likely to overpower a female police officer than a male police officer. Not that males are the only troublemakers. Very Happy Both male and female officers would stand a good chance of overpowering a female criminal...

It depends what type of policing you're talking about. In the lab or in detective work, women would be great. Out on the beat in the streets, maybe not so much...

Let's see if I can add my comments in here. Smile

I see no reason why a woman can't be in the military, and I'll even venture to say in combat as well. There are certainly some women who can handle it. However, some woman can easily allow their emotions to get in the way of the task at hand. I wouldn't say that is THE reason why women shouldn't be in combat because women have faced plenty of other tasks (such as nursing in war zones) that are equally emotionally straining. My concern would be that men wouldn't respect women enough to follow them. Say a woman is above the men in rank (I won't say a specific one because I know I'd mess it up) and she was going to lead them into some sort of battle. Maybe she's the toughest female on the planet...but do men respect her enough to obey her command? I'm guessing that some would, but is it a risk that the millitary wants to take in putting a woman in command? It's a tricky situation, for sure.

I think the same goes for police women. (Has anyone seen "Police Women of Broward County"?) There are definitely some women who can take it.

It was a long-running TV show set in the Korean War era. It was an army hospital where they treated a lot of wounded. It was a comedic show, but had some not so good stuff morally in it.

I don't often refer somebody to Wikipedia purely because of how questionable the reliability of any information on that site can be, but that will at least tell you a bit more about the show.

I mentioned M*A*S*H because someone was talking about Scrubs which I guess is about nurses. I mentioned M*A*S*H because M*A*S*H also has nurses and I love that show.
